The artist

About MRK

Margrét Ragna Kjartansdóttir studied at Myndlista og handíðaskóli Íslands, the Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts, and graduated in 1993. She is a member of Leirlistafélag Íslands (the Icelandic ceramic artists' association), SÍM (the Association of Icelandic Visual Artists) and Vatnslitafélag Íslands (the Icelandic watercolour society).

Shot glasses are a large part of her work. Each one is thrown on the wheel and fired twice, first at 900 °C and then at 1200 °C. The glasses are just under 7 cm tall and mostly made of white stoneware, with a few in black stoneware. Every glass has a stamp of Iceland's outline on the bottom.

She is also designing vases and cups at the moment. The work is available here in the online shop, and you are welcome to ask about custom orders, whether for yourself or for a company.

The process

Thrown on the wheel

Every piece is thrown from stoneware, either white or black.

First firing

The first firing is at 900 °C. After that the piece is ready to be glazed.

Glazing and second firing

The glaze is applied and the piece is fired again at 1200 °C. That is where each one gets its own look.
